The most famous play which deals with love and hate and proves that love conquers all. Although the play is a tragedy and ends in death, it could be said that love eventually triumphs. The play shows the city of Verona, which serves as a background for relations between not only two families, but between two groups of people: some of them belong to Capulet`s clan, others to Montague`s. The most important parts belong to two young people - Romeo and Juliet. Their families had always had the ancient grudge, but the children (let us mention that they were teenagers) fell in love with each other. The play ends in their death, but this death is to stop the ancient grudge. “Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. From forth the fatal loins of these two foes A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life; Whose misadventur'd piteous overthrows Doth with their death bury their parents' strife.” In the Prologue we understand the main idea of the play - two families, which are equal in their noble origin and glory have flared up hostility. “Clubs, bills, and partisans! Strike! beat them down! Citizens. Down with the Capulets! Down with the Montagues!” We are not told the reason for the hate but it is easy to understand that the grudge lasts for too long and nobody, neither masters nor servants realize why they are at war. The fight in the first act starts with a very silly thing -the servants of two different clans meet and begin quarreling.” Abr. Do you bite your thumb at us, sir? Samp. I do bite my thumb, sir. Abr. Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?” Each of them thinks his master is the best; they try to start a quarrel, but the reader understands there is no real reason for quarrelling at all. Besides the servants, there are seven people more present in the square and each of them has his own point of view of the fight. Tybalt and Benvolio, two young people belonging to different clans try to stop “fools”, but can not find understanding and start fighting. ” Ben. Part, fools! [Beats down their swords.] Put up your swords. You know not what you do.” Benvolio says he is trying to reconcile the servants, but Tybalt challenges him by saying that it is impossible to talk about peace holding a sword in the hands. ” Tyb. What, drawn, and talk of peace? I hate the word As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee. Have at thee, coward” Both of them say the right things but they do not hear each other and being blinded with anger, start fighting. When the masters come, they see the battle but they do not know who has been the instigator and start threaten each other. ” Cap. What noise is this? Give me my long sword, ho!” Neither seignior Montague nor seignior Capulet understands why there is a grudge between them. Gradually more and more people join the fight.
