Summary of the 4th part of the novel
“The Painted Veil”
Walter suggests going to a dangerous place where hundreds of people are dying every day. Kitty is shocked to see Walter behaving like that and forcing her to go to Mei-tan-fu. Anyway she has no chance to escape it and it doesn`t make any difference to her after what Charley has done. Kitty and Walter finally go to Mei-tan-fu. By the way Kitty reflects on what is the real meaning of her life now and if it makes any sense. She is depressed and comes to a conclusion that she doesn`t want to live anymore. Kitty and Walter hardly say a word to each other while traveling to Mei-tan-fu.
